CATHCART CLAN HISTORY
The lands of Cathcart take their name from the River Cart in Renfrewshire. "Caeth-cart'
means the 'strait of Cart'.
The progenitor of this family appears to have been Rainaldus de Kethcart
who, as early as 1178, was witness to a
charter of the king's steward to Paisley Abbey.

The following was copied in part from the family history as reported by Tomas
Johnson Sherrard in 1890.
The connection of the Sherrards with the Kithcarts is through Mary Kithcart,
who was the first wife of Robert Andrew
Sherrard of Steubenville. Additional data was added after extensive
research on ancestry.com and rootsweb.com and from submissions from other
Kithcart cousins.
